Mr. Stephen K. Rivero received his bachelor of Music from the University of Miami and was named the 1995 Honor Graduate for the School of Music. He has been the Director of Bands at Charles W. Flanagan High School since August of 2006. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Rivero was the Director of Bands and Fine Arts Department Chair at Hialeah High School. While at Hialeah, he was named Teacher of the Year for 2002, and had achieved great success with all of his ensembles. While at Hialeah, he served as the District Chairman for Miami-Dade County, District 16, of the Florida Bandmasters Association. In addition to his Civilian profession, Mr. Rivero serves as the Commander and Conductor of the Florida National Guard’s, 13th Army Band. He has been a member of the Army Band for the past twenty-five years and has performed throughout the United States, South America, Morocco, and most recently in Saint Kitts.
Under his direction, Flanagan’s Marching, Jazz, and Concert Bands have consistently earned superior ratings at all Florida Bandmasters Association Music Performance Assessments. In 2008, the Marching Band was featured in the Emmy Nominated ABC Christmas Day Parade from Walt Disney World, and was named a finalist at the Bands of America Orlando Regional. The Wind Orchestra has consistently received the straight superior ratings at the State level for the past four years. In 2009, his Wind Orchestra traveled to Washington DC to compete in the National Adjudicator’s Invitational and were crowned National Champion.In January of 2010, Mr. Rivero was selected by the Florida Music Educators Association (FMEA) to be the Conductor/Clinician of the All-State Small School Honor Band. At this event, he was given the honor of premiering Robert Sheldon’s work, One Thousand Cranes, with his ensemble.
Most recently, his Wind Orchestra was selected to perform at one of the premier concert hour performances for the 2011 FMEA Conference.

Dean Broadbent Associate Director of Bands & Director of Color Guards
Mr. Broadbent is a graduate of Western Connecticut State University. Prior to coming to Flanagan in 2001, Mr. Broadbent taught music at Samuel Staples Elementary School in Easton, Connecticut. He marched from 1990-1992 in the Connecticut Hurricanes senior drum and bugle corps and with the 1993-1996 Cadets of Bergen County. Mr. Broadbent has teaching experience with the 1997 Boston Crusaders, and with the Cadets from 1998 to 2002 (including a year as the Color guard caption head in 2001) and returned to the Boston Crusaders from 2004-2006.. Other color guard teaching experiences include Danbury HS, Connecticut from 1994 to 1998, Norwalk HS, Connecticut from 1998 to 2001, the 2001 St. Anns World bronze medallist, and the 2002, 2010 Braddock Independent color guards. Mr. Broadbent has been the Director of Color Guards at Flanagan High School since 2001. Since then, Flanagan has received the Scholastic Open Bronze medal in 2003, State Color Guard Champions in 2004 & 2006 as well as WGI Scholastic World Class Finalist since 2004. They are the South Florida Winter Guard Association Champions for the last 8 consecutive years, longer then any other school in South Florida history. In 2008 Flanagan was named the WGI Scholastic World Champions and in 2009 the WGI Scholastic World Bronze Medalist. Mr. Broadbent currently serves on the South Florida Winter Guard Association Board, WGI Advisory Board and WGI Board of Directors.

Ed Maina Associate Director of Bands & Orchestra Director
Mr. Maina is very active as a woodwind soloist and clinician as well as an
educator. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Music and Jazz Studies and a Master of Music Degree in Jazz Pedagogy from the University of Miami and the Associate Director of Bands, as well as the Orchestra Director here at Flanagan High School.
Prior to teaching at Flanagan, Mr. Maina was the Director of Bands at Lawton
Chiles Middle School for seven years and thirteen years at Westview
Middle School, both in Miami-Dade County. While there, he earned the coveted "Louis Armstrong Fellowship Award", awarded by the International Association of Jazz Educators for excellence in Jazz Education (1992).
While fulfilling his duties as an educator, Mr. Maina travels several times a
year performing concerts and conducting clinics. He also was one the coordinators of the
Superintendent's Honors Jazz Band (Miami-Dade County), and has also been the guest conductor and soloist for Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade County's Honor bands. He was also a selection adjudicator for F.B.A., Middle School All-State bands for two years. Some of his performing and recording credits include Linda Eder, Natalie Cole, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Jon Secada, Chaka Khan, Pebo Bryson, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Charytin (Univision), Ednita Rosario, The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Bob James, Chubby and Duffy Jackson, Jaco Pastorius, Louie Bellison, Oscar Peterson, Mel Torme and The Maynard Ferguson Orchestra.
Mr. Maina still performs, records, private teaches and resides in Pembroke
Pines, Florida. He is happily married ( 25 years, now ) and is very proud his two children Justin
(22), and Priscilla
(20) who is an accomplished flute player with the United States Marine Corps Band (Okinawa). Both of my children are Flanagan HS and All State
Band Alumni. Priscilla will als be featured on her dad's upcoming CD/album..."In the Company of
Brothers".
